Britain spends more than Europe on gifts

We found that shoppers will spend more money on gifts for their kids than the rest of Europe. Men generally spend around £347 while women spend £89 more – parting with around £436.

Typically this spend increases around Christmas, where the average adult is expected to part with £280 on gifts for loved ones. Unsurprisingly, there is almost a 50/50 split in those planning ahead and buying gifts last minute – with a shocking 6.7 million people leaving festive shopping to the very last day.

Birthday spending reaches new high

The typical cost of a child’s birthday party in Britain is now around £320 – higher than the United States.

Around 21 per cent of all families will rack up costs by hiring an entertainer, while 19 per cent will splash out on catering, and a further 16 per cent opting for decorations – one of the priciest aspects of a party.

The rest of the budget is then eaten up by venue costs and party bags, further adding to already increasing costs. And while the UK might spend the highest on birthday parties, two thirds of parents believe it’s worth the money.

Mother’s Day, the UK’s second largest consumer holiday

Mother’s Day is now the second largest consumer holiday in Britain. Spending for this cherished holiday reached £510 million last year and is light-years ahead compared to the £310 million spent on Father’s Day.

Surprisingly, most leave Mother’s Day shopping to a week before the holiday arrives according to our research, demonstrating a growing trend of last-minute shopping. With so many deals online nowadays, maybe buying in advance is becoming a thing of the past.
